Urgent- Information Bulletin n° 1 Sistan va Baluchistan, Iran Earthquake 16 April 2013
This bulletin is being issued for information, and reflects the current situation and details available at this time. The Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS), has determined that external assistance is not required at this moment, and is therefore not seeking funding or other assistance from donors and the International Movement of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies at this time.
An earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale shook Saravan city, Sistan va Balouchistan province, Iran on 16 April 2013. As per Tehran University’s Seismological Center, the earthquake hit at 15:14 local time. The earthquake has also been felt in neighboring countries of Pakistan, Emirates, India and Afghanistan. The depth of the earthquake was at the depth of 18 KM with the epicenter of the 81 KM OF Saravan city, 83 KM of Khash city and 85 KM of Souran city.The affected area is not a populated area. According to Seismological Center, the earthquake was the biggest one in its kind over the past 40 years ago.
As per latest from the field, Preliminary assessments are under way by Sistan va Baluchistan and neighboring branches. After half an hour the power and telecommunication cut have been restored. At present, there is no report of heavy damages or casualties. However, we are expecting credible report from our assessment teams in the field. Furthermore, 40 ambulances are at the affected areas.
Red Crescent action
Air search and rescue operation has begun and it is being continued. Three of the IRCS helicopters have been deployed to the affected areas. 40 ambulances are at the affected areas. At the same time relief teams and items have been dispatched to the field. 46 Relief & Rescue teams from the IRCS Hormozgan, Kerman, south Khorasan, Khorasan Razavi and Fars provincial branches with tools and equipment were immediately dispatched to the affected areas and swung into actions. Food item, water and necessary commodities have been dispatched to the affected zones.
